Drywood Termites: One of the most destructive species in Florida

Drywood termites DO NOT need moisture from the soil to survive. Instead, they infest dry, untreated wood, feed on cellulose and weakening structures from the inside out.

Sarasota and Manatee counties’ tropical and humid environment create an ideal condition for drywood termites to thrive. They are especially active during warmer months, but infestations can happen year-round.

Drywood termites swarm as part of their reproductive cycle. Swarming occurs when mature colonies produce winged reproductive termites, known as alates, alates leave the nest to establish new colonies. Swarming also allows for genetic diversity by mating individuals from other colonies to maintain genetic variation which allows them to adapt to environmental changes. Swarming also allows them to seek out suitable nesting sites in dry wood, low moisture areas.

Signs that you may have a dry wood termite infestation include the presence of swarmer’s, frass (termite droppings), hallow or damaged wood, tiny holes in wood and sagging or warped wood.

If you suspect or confirm a drywood termite infestation, professional treatment is essential to eliminate them completely. Here are the most effective methods used by Westfall’s.

1. Fumigation (Tent Treatment): For severe or widespread infestations, whole-structure fumigation is the most effective method.

2. Localized Spot Treatments: If termites are confined to a small area, spot treatments using liquid termiticides or foam injections can be effective. This method targets infested wood directly without affecting the entire structure.

3. Borate Wood Treatment: Borate-based treatments can be applied to wood surfaces to kill existing termites and prevent new infestations. This method is often used for preventive measures in new construction or when treating exposed wood.
